Scarecrow Contest Ushers in Pendleton Fall Festival

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

Pendleton’s annual Scarecrow contest is back, bringing creativity and community spirit to the town square and surrounding area this fall as part of the bigger annual fall harvest festival set for Saturday. This year marks the first time the Town of Pendleton has organized the event on its own, after taking over from local organizations that previously coordinated it. (The program was formerly managed by the Pendleton Chamber of Commerce and later by the Pendleton Area Business Association (PABA).)

Community Engagement Manager Lindsey Watley said the town “spearheaded” the 2025 event to continue a much-loved fall tradition that highlights the creativity of residents, businesses, and organizations across the area.

Mayor Frank Crenshaw said the purpose is simple — to have fun and bring people together. “It’s mainly about fun,” said Crenshaw. “People like to compete, get involved, and have bragging rights after it’s over.”

Participants create imaginative scarecrow displays that line the streets and storefronts of historic Pendleton, with winners earning cash prizes. The event, a local favorite, celebrates creativity and community pride while drawing visitors downtown to enjoy seasonal sights and small-town charm.

The winners will be announced as part of Saturday’s festival.
